On June 4, 2000, the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine graduated its inaugural class. They shared with the College a pioneering spirit and drive that are characteristic of all new organizations. Throughout their four years they set a desirable, yet attainable tenor for future classes.
One of the most popular aspects of our curriculum is the introduction of first-year students to the clinical setting. Every other week during the first and second years, students spend one afternoon with a preceptor in a "shadowing" experience. This has proved to be extremely rewarding for both students and preceptors. The curriculum has now matured into the fourth-year where students rotate through various ambulatory settings under the direct supervision of preceptors. These dedicated physicians teach in the clinical setting as well as the more traditional hospital environment with daily rounds. Fourth-year students have ample opportunities for elective and hospital-based rotations while maintaining the ambulatory training concept.
The value of being a relatively new college, averaging 130 students per class, is that innovation is not hampered by history or tradition and change can occur rapidly. AZCOM, including our most valuable asset, the students, embraces the opportunity to bring about paradigm change.
